467 Fun Conversation Starters Any Awkward Moment (+ Example Answers)

467 Fun Conversation Starters Any Awkward Moment (+ Example Answers)

If you're ever at a loss for what to say next, these conversation starters should help! They include specific questions that are designed to not only get your chat going, but also help you find common ground.

A few examples of starting a conversation are “Would you rather live in the past or the future?” and "What's the craziest thing that happened to you last week?" If you're looking for a conversation starter for two, then “What would you do if you were invisible?” is a fun one.

A more open-ended question is “Tell me something about your life.” There are no restrictions on how they should answer. You just have to listen and ask questions based on what they say. Our list will give you interesting topics to talk about, no matter what the situation.

Another option is “What's your favorite thing about the world right now?” This will allow you to get their opinions on all sorts of things. It'll also make it easier to keep the conversation going because there are plenty of sub-topics to follow up with.

A question that starts with how or why is “Why do you do what you do?” This allows for more of a discussion to occur. You can also use this if they ask a question that you want to pursue. For example, some people are curious about the origin of a person's nickname. We have listed a few conversation starters that will seem weird or random but they often spark the best conversations.

How To Start A Conversation

Starting a conversation can feel impossible when anxiety kicks in. It's better to approach someone without expectations of what they want out of it. Approach the person, compliment their dress or shoes as an opening conversation starter. Ask them about their day or how they're feeling and see where it takes you.

As soon as we stop talking about ourselves and begin to talk about our feelings, we can quiet anxiety and stop focusing on how other people will respond. This is a good way to start a conversation because you control the pace at which you open up and share yourself with another person.

That being said, it's best not to go into a conversation thinking that everything needs to be positive and wonderful. That's not realistic. Some people will have things they want to talk about and some won't. It's okay to talk about how you're feeling, but it's also okay to say how you feel too! I usually tell people I feel like I'm a bad listener too because I feel like I don't try hard enough to listen correctly and really hear what they are saying.

There are times when we might need help starting a conversation, but it can be hard for us to seek out that help because we feel embarrassed or worried that people think we're strange. Often the most strange and random questions lead to the best conversations, so we have included a lot of funny ones below.

But you should know that anytime someone asks if there is anything wrong with us or why we can't make friends, they are projecting their own insecurities onto us.

We have separated the questions into categories so each question is tailored to a situation: Personal Experiences, Career, Aspirations, Travel, Technology, TV & Film, Sport, Music, Food, Books and Fashion.

Best Career Questions

What's your dream job?

I want to be a news presenter because I love public speaking. My Mum always told me that I was brilliant with languages and would make a great politician, but my Dad always said that I'm too sensitive for this kind of career.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I always wanted to be my own boss. I thought that there was quite a bit of freedom with that. I know where my business is going, and I want to make sure it's heading in the right direction.

Why do you like working for yourself?

I like being more creative and having the ability to work anytime I want. I don't have to answer to anyone. I love the freedom.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I get to talk to people all over the world! It's one of the coolest things about being a social media manager. When I see people from other countries like Australia or Spain posting my video footage from America, it just makes me so happy.
And when I am traveling, I just get so excited and can't wait to post photos and videos for my friends and followers. It's really cool because you never know whose going to see your posts and what kind of impact you'll make on someone else by doing what you love! For example, if it wasn't for social media, I would have never met the celebrities I have met!

Have you got any side hustles going?

I started a small business with my brother. We're taking care of our kids while raising awareness for autism and diabetes. We hold free quarterly parties for families of children living with these conditions. In the past, we've also worked together at a school that specializes in sensory curriculum for kids with different learning styles.

What is the worst job you've ever had?

I've worked as a janitor and my boss didn't believe in giving us breaks. Most days we worked 8 hours without a break. We had to take our lunch into the bathroom with us. All I could think of was how hard I wanted something else in my life, but at the same time I was grateful for having a job.

What career advice are you going to give to your children?

I would tell my children to never settle. And that they should always go after their dreams and believe in themselves. That is the most important thing you can do and the best way to live your life. Always remember that you have a choice of how to handle your challenges and obstacles, and this book will teach you exactly how to do that.

I would tell them not to be afraid of taking risks because there is something inside each of us that has a lot of power, if we let it. It's only when we don't listen to this power inside our souls are we left with fear, doubt, insecurity or regrets of what could have been.

How have you found working from home?

It's very different. The hardest part has been coming up with ideas and motivation when I'm not going to the studio. Being home allows me to be more focused on creating something creative and I get a lot of inspiration from the little things like taking a walk or cooking or just doing work around the house.

How do you handle your work/life balance?

I think it is important for us all to find ways to stay healthy and happy in life, so it's important to look for opportunities everywhere we can. Also, as an artist you have to be open-minded about your conception of how you want your life to look like.

Do you think mentors are useful at work?

Yeah! One of the best things you can have is a mentor who can see your potential and motivate you to do better. When there's someone giving you advice and driving you to be on your best day, that's great. Someone that will give you positive feedback is always good for a person's performance.

However, it's very important to make sure that the mentor doesn't take all the credit. A mentor should be giving their advise because they've seen that potential and want to help move it forward, not just because they want credit for it or want something in return.

The minute they start doing that, everything changes. They start coming after the person asking for things or critiquing them more than they should.

How do you motivate yourself at work?

I do a lot of things. I like to surround myself with people that are really motivated and driven to do well. I'm always looking for new ways to motivate myself personally, but it's good to have people around me that help with that as well. I definitely pledge every New Year's Eve, which is just something I started doing about six months ago. It's been a really good way for me to see what I want to accomplish the next year and make sure I'm on track and set goals. We also have fitness trackers at work so we can look at our health goals daily and meet them every few weeks when we get together as a company.

Best Questions About Goals and Aspirations

Do you have any goals for the future?

Yes! I'm planning to open up a new location for my business in 2019, and I'm also planning on quitting smoking soon. I'd like to be better at finishing what I start.

What do you want to accomplish in the next year?

I'd like to have my business be successful and make some real money and also have more of a presence on Instagram. I'd also like for my house and car to be paid off. I don't want to have any debt.

What is the most recent accomplishment you are proud of?

I got accepted into the business program at my college. I like having my own income and being responsible for it.

What is your biggest goal?

To make money for my children! They need to have everything they want, so I want to make sure they have a nice life.

Where is your favorite place so far?

What can't you travel without?

  • My music, laptop and phone. I can't go to a show or dance without my music, because I love to dance and listen to it while I'm there. After shows, I usually go back home and put on my headphones and just listen for hours. Also I can't travel without my laptop because all of my work is done on it as well as video editing and web design.
  • A notebook. That's what gets me through the day - it's how the creative process gets fueled. I write down thoughts and ideas, and it's so easy to lose track of time when you're working on something.
  • My camera. I love taking pictures, so I don't take many photos without it. It's also fun to look back at them later and see what life was like during that particular time. (I actually have my camera on my phone but it's not a good thing to do 'cause the battery dies in about an hour. I'm always on the hunt for a good camera!)

Do you prefer the window or aisle seat on the plane?

I'm going to go with the window seat! I've always preferred the window seat and that's because you get better views of the plane. It's such a cool experience when we're flying in the air. The experience just feels really good as opposed to when sitting on an airplane for a long period of time. You get to take off from one spot and land at another, so it makes it more fun in my opinion.

Who is your dream travel companion?

My dream travel companion would be an interesting person with a heart for helping people and with a great personality. Have you ever lied to your family?

Yes. I've lied to them quite a bit. I lied when I was younger and tried to hide certain things from them to feel better about myself. If you could change anything about the world, what would it be?

I'd love to be more compassionate and less judgmental. I wish people could be better at listening without judging.

What's your best piece of advice?

I would tell you that it's important not to give up and it's important to believe in yourself even if you feel like giving up. Also, if you want something, go after it! Don't expect people to do things for you. Just work on it and keep at it.

Because if you don't give up, it can happen. I would say that you should do what your heart tells you. If you are passionate about something, make it happen.

You want to put yourself in a position where people are interested in what you have to say and can help them listen as well as hear what you have to say. If you're an artist or a musician, you have to create something that moves people and makes them want to listen. Don't worry about what other people are doing. Do what's in your heart and your passion. People will naturally be attracted to that and they will want to help you get started.

I would tell people that it's important not to give up on their dreams, because without dreams we wouldn't be here today. We have a lot of time, so if one plan doesn't work out it just didn't work out for us. There are always going to be obstacles, but we need to push through failure with persistence.

If you had the chance to meet one person from history, who would it be?

That's a hard question. I'd want to talk to George Washington about the revolution because I'm interested in the history of it. It's not a country where I would want to live right now, but it is definitely interesting. We could have a good talk about life back when he was alive.

I want to have a family one day, but I haven't decided if I'm going to get pregnant or not. Right now, it doesn't feel like the right time for me. I'm 29 years old and that's a lot of time, but if I had a child when I was 18 or 19, that would be so hard for me.

Best Questions About Music

What kind of music do you listen to?

A little bit of everything. My taste in music is really diverse and I like to have different kinds on rotation. I don't like listening to the same thing over and over again because then I get bored with it.

Best Questions About Books

As a child, what was your favorite book? What do you still read?

The one that I really loved as a kid was The Boxcar Children. I started reading it to myself when I was about nine or ten years old, and now, whenever I'm feeling depressed, I'll go back to reading the series and that helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The book that I still read is Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. It's like my favorite childhood tale of all time! It was probably one of my favorite books in elementary school too. To this day, it's a story book that gives me inspiration to help other kids live life as well as dream big.

Do you prefer e-readers or physical books?

I prefer traditional books. I collect them. Most of my books are hard copies and not e-books, but that's because I'm an old school person. If you want my e-book, it's on Amazon!

I personally read a lot and if I'm not reading a book, then I will listen to audiobooks or podcasts in the car. That way I can multi-task and get things done while also learning something else.

Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction books?

It depends on the book. I tend to think non-fiction is more useful, but when it comes to fiction, I really enjoy reading books that are not your average run-of-the-mill type of novel. There's a lot of drama in those kinds of novels and I love drama and suspense.

I'm not a person who reads many non-fiction books. If something really interests me, I'll pick it up and read it. But I think it's easier for me to be entertained by fiction than non-fiction books these days. I read a lot when I was younger, but not so much now.

When it comes to fiction, I would have to say that I love reading fantasy and science fiction. In particular, the book Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. That book is really good and has helped me define myself as an individual.

Best Technology Questions

What app on your phone do you use the most?

I love Spotify! I'll be listening to music on there for hours, whether I'm working out or if I'm doing my hair. It really pumps me up and gets me going when I need that extra boost of energy. Also, my other favorite is Airbnb because I travel a lot for work and it helps me find a place to stay, even if it's not a 5-star hotel.

Can technology eliminate poverty?

Technology is very important in that it allows people to connect with each other. It allows them to be aware of the world, and they can learn more about how to cooperate with others. I think there are many factors contributing to poverty. It's not a simple answer.

What technology do you use everyday?

I use Spotify everyday. I like to listen to music when I work out and when I'm in my car going about my day. I also use Uber everyday, because it's a luxury and it's fun!

When I'm working, there are four things that I think are most important—a computer, an Internet connection, a camera, and a good pair of headphones.
I don't know how people can work without headphones! Headphones allow you to be in the zone and not be bothered by other people around you. A good pair of headphones can make that possible for you. You can get more done than ever with the help of a good pair of headphones.

Do you think large technology companies are too powerful?

I think big companies have a right to market their products. I don't think they should understand people's personal lives too much though.

I feel like it can be kind of scary if there's so much power in one place, but I guess that's the nature of the times we live in. If someone is abusing that power or misusing it, then something should change.

Personally, I see technology as a resource for people to communicate and express themselves. That's why I use technology and why I think it should be available to everyone, regardless of income level or anything else.

What is the coolest use of technology you have seen in the last few years?

I love technology! If I have to choose one, I really like social media and all the ways people around the world can connect. I love Uber and Lyft because my best friends don't have cars and we're not near public transportation in London. It's great that you can connect with other people who have a car and are willing to drive you around. Technology is making it easier for us to get around in cities! It's really easy to go out and get food when you live near a restaurant or grocery store, but if you don't live near restaurants, there are always apps for that.

Are you a mac or a windows fan?

I love both equally. I usually switch from one to the other depending on what mood I'm in and how I'm feeling at the time. Both are great operating systems for specific reasons.

We'd fish, bird watch, camp out, we had a blast. Looking back on it, it was one of my favorite times as a kid because it was so much fun being with my friends! The world seemed like it was our oyster.

Have you ever been skiing before?

I haven't, but I would love to. I'm still working on it. I haven't been to the mountains, but I would like to get an adventure out of it!
That sounds like a lot of fun. Hopefully, one day you can take me with you and we can enjoy all that Montana has to offer.

What is the longest plane journey you've ever been on?

I've been to many countries, but the longest I think was from the Paris to Sydney. It was a 24 hour flight and I got food poisoning in the plane on my way there which lasted for the entire three hours of waiting at the airport and the entire flight. That was by far the longest plane ride I have ever had and also probably one of my most memorable experiences ever!

Best Sport Questions

Do you play any sports?

I do not play sports. I have one friend who plays soccer, and he is absolutely a phenomenal athlete. I wish I could be as athletically gifted as him, but unfortunately I haven't found my sport yet.

But I do workout at the gym. It has also brought me closer with the people around me so that we can challenge each other and push each other toward our goals.

Did you play any sports when you were younger?

I played baseball and I played soccer, but I didn't continue playing. I remember when me and my friends played outside at age six, we used to have a lot of fun. We'd play hide and seek whenever we wanted.

Do you support any sports teams?

I'm a big sports fan! I like the Lakers because they play in my home town, but I also like the LA Chargers. I don't live in LA anymore, but I'll always be from there. The first time I went to a game at Dodger Stadium was for the World Series in 1988. I try to go back whenever I have an opportunity. It's my favorite place to see a game.

Who is your favourite athlete?

Michael Jordan is my favorite athlete. I like that he was a hard worker, he was motivated and his will to win was incredible. He took it from being good to being the best, and that's the biggest difference between those who make it and those who don't.

I love the underdog aspect of his story. He didn't have all the opportunities as other people did, but he created opportunities for himself. That's so powerful and speaks a lot to how we as individuals act in our own lives every day. We can't wait for opportunities or excuses.

Best Music Questions

What music do you listen to nowadays?

I don't listen that much actually. I follow a lot of fellow artists on social media that play the kind of music that I like. For example, Zeds Dead and RL Grime. I like going to the shows as well and seeing some great DJs play live!

What first got you into music?

I would say that I got into music as a way of communicating. I once had this teacher who used to say, "You can't make a piece of music without listening." It's so true and important. I was always interested in writing and performing, but there was never much opportunity for me. So when I started playing in bands it opened the door to be able to sing my songs and get them performed at venues.
I knew that this could be my medium for expression, and it really did open up a lot of doors for me.

What inspires you when you make music?

I get inspired by people. The things that motivate me are things that other people have experienced. I've been inspired by other artists who have had the courage to put themselves out there and talk about their experiences.

Sometimes it's just a feeling in my heart and sometimes you have to go with what your gut tells you. It's important to listen to that feeling, but if it doesn't feel right, it doesn't feel right. You can hold yourself back from doing something if you're scared of the outcome or the failure that comes from your actions.

What song do you enjoy performing the most?

I like a lot of oldies, but my favorite ever is "Angel From Montgomery (Standing In The Shadows)" by the Crystals!

Who is your favorite musician? Who is your favorite songwriter?

Keith Urban and Ed Sheeran are my two favorite musicians. James Taylor is also an amazing singer and songwriter. And I'm so in love with Lana Del Rey's song "Young & Beautiful".

What artist would you love to collaborate with?

It's difficult for me to pick one because there are so many amazing artists around the world! But if I had to choose, it would be someone from Canada. They are so creative and I think it'd be an honor to collaborate with them. Maybe Drake or Justin Bieber.

Best Fashion Questions

What is your favorite piece of clothing?

I like how I feel when I wear a nice pair of jeans, and they fit me well and are comfortable. I like to put on a nice buttoned up shirt with a pair of jeans for sure! I love the shape of this dress that I am wearing right now, because it is a very flattering cut to my body. It shows off my neckline and my shoulders without being too revealing. It's comfortable, but at the same time it makes me feel good about myself. It's not revealing, but it looks great on me!

Do you like dressing smart or casual?

I love to do a little bit of both, but I like to keep it simple. When I'm working out and going to school, I like the comfort of a simple but stylish outfit. For example, black leggings with a nice top and some cute shoes. But sometime it's fun to take that one outfit and elevate it with jewelry, an accessory or nail polish. I'm currently into the trend of statement earrings! It's fun having one or two pairs that really make an impact for me. They might be big hoops or whatever works for your personality.
